Department Announcements
A word of caution to all certified personnel regarding online course work for the “Plus 30 Semester Hours”

Dr. Kathy D. Sims, Executive Director of Human Resources
Recently, the State Department of Education Office of Teacher Licensing has received several requests from educators who hold Master’s degrees on their teaching licenses and wish to add the “Plus 30 Semester hours” designation for salary rating purposes by means of online courses. In a number of cases, these requests have had to be denied even though these educators completed online course work at accredited institutions that advertised their courses as being “Graduate Level”. When these educators received their official transcripts they discovered they had actually been awarded post-baccalaureate, professional development, in-service or continuing education credit instead of graduate credit such as could be used as part of a graduate degree program.  Educators need to be extremely cautious about taking online course work for the Plus 30 semester hour designation.

If you choose online courses for part of your 30 hours beyond your degree, the official transcript must reflect graduate semester hours credit, not post-baccalaureate credit, professional development, in-service or continuing education credit. Unfortunately for educators taking these online courses, the actual credit earned is often not fully understood or explained until after one or more courses have been taken. Please be advised that if you take online course work with the expectation of receiving graduate credit that you must be diligent in checking the type of course you are taking. In most cases, courses are numbered according to the type of course it is.
Professional development courses often have a higher course code number than graduate credit courses.

If you have questions regarding online courses, feel free to contact the State Department of Education Office of Teacher Licensing by telephone at (615) 532-4885 or by email at education.Licensing@state.tn.us
